New York State Attorney General Letitia James has opened an investigation into the finances of the National Rifle Association, her spokeswoman said Saturday.
"The New York State Attorney General's Office, Letitia James, has launched an investigation related to the National Rifle Association (NRA)," spokeswoman Kelly Donnelly said in an email to The Associated Press. "As part of this investigation, the Attorney General issued subpoenas."
William A. Brewer, the ANR's outside lawyer, said the gun advocacy group "will cooperate fully with any investigation into his finances".

James, a Democrat, has pledged during his campaign last year to investigate the status of the nonprofit organization of the NRA if it is elected.
"I will use the constitutional power as Attorney General to regulate charities, including the NRA, to investigate their legitimacy," she said at a rally on Aug. 1. July 12th.
The news comes as the gun rights group tackles internal strife that erupted at its annual convention in Indianapolis this weekend. Oliver North announced Saturday that he would step down from his role as president. This decision follows his unsuccessful attempt to dismiss NRA executive vice-president Wayne LaPierre.

The flaw within the NRA has been fueled in part by the threat of New York's investigation. The group began studying all of its contractors last summer after James promised to investigate.
The review led the ANR to sue its long-standing public relations firm, Ackerman McQueen, based in Oklahoma, which officials said was refusing to release the financial documents. North had sided with the firm in the legal battle, which had led to accusations that he was in conflict of interest because Ackerman had paid him.

The NRA has repeatedly clashed with New York's elected officials in an attempt to reduce the political influence of the organization.
Last year, the group filed a lawsuit against Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo and other state officials after the New York insurance broker was sentenced to a $ 7 million fine for taking out an NRA insurance program called Carry Guard.
