Pepe Le Pew, the French comic book skunk whose loving attentions have driven generations of females away, has been the target of the New York Times.

Columnist Charles M. Blow claims in a tweet today that the Looney Tunes character “added to the culture of rape.”

“The RW blogs are crazy because I said Pepe Le Pew was added to the rape culture. Let’s see. 1. He catches / kisses a girl / stranger, repeatedly, without her consent and against her will. 2. She has trouble getting away from him, but he doesn’t release her 3. He locks a door to prevent her from escaping. That’s right… Penelope Pussycat was often in Pepe’s clutches.

Looney Tunes previously stopped featuring guns in its updated portrayals of Elmer Fudd.

Blow had previously faced Dr. Seuss in a editorial titled “Six books Seuss Bore a Bias”. He argued that early exposure to negative images shapes perceptions. He mentioned Speedy Gonzales, the Mexican mouse cartoon, as one of those negatives.

Understandably, there were mixed feelings online about taking Blow. But he is not alone in his perception. Comedian Dave Chappelle pointed out the same thing in a classic routine:
