A New York woman was charged with murder on Friday after authorities claimed she starved her boyfriend’s 7-year-old son to death earlier this year.
Leticia Bravo, 39, became the main caretaker of Peter Cuacuas in September 2020 after the start of the school year and he stayed at her house every day until Saturday, when he wants to go to the apartment of his father, said Newburgh Police Commissioner Jose A. Gomerez. In January, Peter stopped connecting to the virtual school and was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital on February 10, where he was pronounced dead.
“An autopsy conducted by the Orange County medical examiner concluded that Peter – who weighed only 37 pounds – had died of malnutrition,” Gomerez said on Friday. “It is alleged that Bravo left Peter locked up and isolated in a room behind doors, locked from the outside since January 2021.”
Bravo is said to be Peter’s mother, but authorities could not say for sure at a press conference on Friday.
She was arrested Thursday and charged with second degree murder, first degree manslaughter and second degree manslaughter. His bond was set at $ 250,000 in cash, but would be reduced with a guaranteed bond, authorities said.
Bravo faces 25 years in prison for life on the main count of second degree murder.
Peter’s father, Arturo Cuacuas, was charged with negligent homicide but was not in custody on Friday, according to Orange County Prosecutor David Hoovler. A phone number listed for him was not in service when NBC News requested comment on Sunday.
Cuacuas was charged because even though he only had the child one day a week, he “should have known” his son’s condition, according to Hoovler.
Court records were not immediately available for Bravo or Cuacuas and it is not clear whether they retained attorneys.
