New York Yankees send P Adam Ottavino to Boston Red Sox in rare exchange between rivals

The New York Yankees traded reliever Adam Ottavino to the Boston Red Sox.

The exchange is the first deal between rivals AL East since the one involving Stephen Drew and Kelly Johnson in 2014.

In addition to Ottavino, the Yankees have announced they will send RHP Frank German to Boston, with a source saying ESPN’s $ 850,000 Buster Olney is also heading to the Red Sox. Boston, in return, will send either a player to be named later or cash to New York.

Ottavino signed a three-year, $ 27 million contract with the Yankees ahead of the 2019 season.

He has proven to be a key part of the 2019 New York relievers box background, with a 1.90 ERA in 73 appearances this season. However, 2020 proved difficult for Ottavino, as he had a 5.89 ERA and made three saves in 24 appearances.

The right-hander will always hold a place in Yankees lore, as he was the first player in franchise history to wear the number 0.
