New York statewide positivity rate for the coronavirus hit a new high for the fall season, aided by the increase in the state’s 29 different micro-cluster areas – the Zone the highest had a 7-day average of just under 10%.
The state’s positivity rate has continued to rise in recent weeks, from 3.08% on Monday to 3.98% on Saturday, according to Gov. Andrew Cuomo. While the most recent day reflects the highest positivity rate seen in months, the 7-day average sits a little lower at 3.32%.
Western New York continues to stand out from other areas, reaching an average positivity of 6.53% on Saturday. State data shows the region holds a 2 percent rate above the second highest region: the Finger Lakes.
Eric County, which is in the region and where Buffalo is located, reported the highest number of new cases outside New York on Saturday. The county, at present, holds both an orange and yellow micro-cluster area.
“We are entering a difficult time of continued spread of COVID-19 in this state,” Cuomo said in a press release on Saturday. “It’s up to you, your neighborhood and your community to slow the spread.”

Additional testing begins for students in the Rockland County Yellow Zone on Monday. The zone school district has until Dec. 9 to test 20 percent of students and staff, per state requirements once a yellow zone designation is declared.
Minors must bring a parental consent form to be tested on new sites. The tests will be provided by staff at Good Samaritan Hospital.
The tests for members of the school communities in the zone take place Monday through Friday between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the following locations:
- Monday: Entrance to the garage of the Palisades Center shopping center. This is a site accessible by car or on foot for those arriving by bus.
- Tuesday: Suffern High School located at 49 Viola Road in Suffern
- Wednesday: Spring Valley High School located at 361 E. Route 59 in Spring Valley
- Thursday: Rockland BOCES, Bldg. 10 located at 65 Parrott Road in West Nyack.
- Friday: Entrance to the garage of the Palisades Center shopping center. This is a site accessible by car or on foot for those arriving by bus.
The state’s report on Saturday follows two consecutive days of record testing – performing 219,442 tests on Thursday. The number of New Yorkers hospitalized with the coronavirus was 3,287, up 184 from the previous day.
The United States reached 13 million diagnosed cases of Covid-19 on Friday, another milestone in a month riddled with these.
It was the fourth such marker the country had in November, which recorded 3.8 million cases of the coronavirus. The United States is on track to total more than 4 million cases this month alone, more than double the previous record of 1.9 million cases set in October.
