NEW YORK (AP) – Northwell Health, the largest healthcare provider in New York State, has announced that 1,400 employees have been fired for refusing to be vaccinated against COVID-19.
The layoffs represent less than 2% of the total workforce at Northwell, which operates 23 hospitals and more than 700 ambulatory care facilities across the state.
“Northwell believes that having a fully immunized workforce is an important step in our duty to protect the health and safety of our staff, patients and the communities we serve,” officials said Monday. company in a press release.
Officials said they regretted losing employees, adding their goal was to “comply with New York state’s mandate and get people vaccinated, not fire them.”
The statewide vaccination mandate for all hospital and nursing home workers went into effect on September 27. It will be expanded on Thursday to include workers in home care, hospices and adult care facilities.
