13 WWE NXT talents (Bronson Reed, Bobby Fish, Leon Ruff, Tyler Rust, Jake Atlas, Mercedes Martinez, Asher Hale, Giant Zanjeer, Zechariah Smith, Kona Reeves, Ari Sterling, Desmond Troy, referee Stephon Smith) were released last Friday night, and word is that major changes for the NXT brand are underway.
It was reported today by Andrew Zarian of the Dull Men podcast that there is a lot of talk about the NXT Cuts among the top officials of the USA Network. A senior US official was reportedly disappointed with the way things are going with the NXT brand.
“The perception of many is that these coming changes will be negative. Perception means everything, especially when working with partners who aren’t wrestling fans and don’t have a deep understanding of talent. In reality, are the changes to NXT a bad thing? Time to say, ”Zarian added.
As for the major NXT changes underway, PWInsider reported Friday night that the changes discussed include a new NXT logo, new lighting and look, a different format from the weekly USA Network TV show, and a focus on young talents. It was then reported over the weekend by Wrestling Observer Radio that the releases were part of a bigger shift in philosophy for NXT. WWE CEO Vince McMahon called for the cuts, but Talent Relations Officer John Laurinaitis and Senior Vice President Bruce Prichard were also behind them, not Shawn Michaels or Triple H.
It has also been said that the new goal is to go back to the old style of WWE development for NXT, with bigger and younger talent. It was noted that the leadership of NXT is “more dwarves, no one in their 30s”. WWE wants development to include people who can be “box office attractions and lead characters” down the line.
It’ll be interesting to see if there’s a major NXT reset starting this week, or with the Takeover 36 event scheduled for Sunday, August 22 during the SummerSlam weekend.
