New Indiana head coach Mike Woodson sat down in an exclusive interview with Don Fischer, voice by game, which aired Tuesday night on the IU basketball Facebook page.
Here are some notes from their conversation:
–Woodson began by saying that returning to Indiana was the end goal of his coaching career. “I think I’ve accomplished everything I ever wanted to accomplish in basketball and that’s the last straw for me,” he said.
– Woodson joked about his will to succeed, saying, “My wife and daughters think I’m crazy. They say I have to sit down somewhere and just relax.
–In his introductory press conference on Monday, Woodson talked about playing a modern game with spaced ground and players who can play in multiple positions. When he coached the Atlanta Hawks initially, Woodson said, he didn’t believe in three-point shooting. It was then that he went to coach Carmelo Anthony and the New York Knicks that he changed his coaching philosophy to be more oriented towards taking a high volume of 3 points.
–Woodson also pointed out the possibility of switching to defense, again citing his time in Atlanta where this philosophy was ahead of its time.
– Currently, Woodson’s biggest concern is convincing the transfer portal’s Indiana players to stay in Bloomington. He said he had tried to organize meetings with the players as well as their parents.
– Speaking about Trayce Jackson-Davis, Woodson said, “He’s had a great Big Ten career… But he has to be able to use his other hand and I’m going to beg him to stay with me because I think I’m helping him. . develop and move to the next level.
–Woodson has said he plans to watch the Big Ten crews movie to do his “due diligence” for next season.
– Woodson, recently hired by Thad Matta: “Matta has a great basketball experience and background in terms of what he’s been up to so I can’t think of it but that would help. To move forward on the path to building this team, I think what Scott (Dolson) has done is excellent. “
– Woodson’s last thought about returning to Indiana: “For me, it’s a dream come true.”
