10 years in a psychiatric hospital for stabbing, setting the sister on fire

A woman accused of stabbing her sister and burning her body in the backyard will probably spend more than 10 years in a secure psychiatric hospital.

Boushra Rahman appeared before the Auckland High Court today via audio – visual.

Ms. Rahman is a special patient since she was charged with the murder of her sister in 2008. She is deaf and suffers from intellectual disability, a psychotic illness and a mental illness. a borderline personality disorder.

In 2010 she was declared unfit to stand trial.

But in 2015, the Attorney General ordered that she be brought to court after receiving reports from a psychiatrist and a psychologist who found her fit.

Later that year, court appearances to assess Ms. Rahman's fitness had to be delayed after she was hospitalized to be injured.

In 2016, there was ring in the district court. Judge Tremewan ruled that Ms. Rahman was fit to be tried

The case was referred to the High Court, where the trial date was set for the month of September of last year.

But the trial did not take place. The mental health evaluators concluded that she was still unfit.

Ian Goodwin was one of them. He concluded that Ms. Rahman had only a basic ability to plead and that she would be unable to follow the process.

Woolford J. accepted. He concluded that she would not be able to follow the court process.

Today, the judge ordered Ms. Rahman to become a special patient. He said that it was for the protection of the community and so she could receive rehabilitation.

The order was for 10 years but Judge Woolford said it would probably be longer to address the severity of his issues.

Rahman told the police that she killed her sister after a fight

The police officers who were first on the scene testified before the depositions two years ago

They arrived at Mrs. Rahman in the west of Auckland to find the charred body of her sister.

Constable Sharon Hearn told the court that Ms. Rahman had said that she had quarreled with her sister who had cut her thumb and threatened to kill her.

Ms. Rahman told her that she had killed a car. She told another officer at the police station that she had given medicine to her sister before stabbing her and setting her body on fire
