It's official! Hawaii has made history with the signing of Bill SB2571 which bans chemical sunscreens that harm coral reefs and delicate marine ecosystems. The new law will require many brands of sunscreens such as Coppertone, Banana Boat and Hawaiian Tropic to rethink their formulas. According to researchers, up to 14,000 tons of sunscreen are found each year in the world's coral reefs. For fish, chemicals are known to be endocrine disruptors responsible for reproductive diseases, embryonic deformity and feminization of male fish.
Craig Downs, forensic ecotoxicologist and executive director of Haereticus Environmental Laboratory, told CNN: "Oxybenzone is really toxic to the juvenile form of corals … and this is consistent with the dogma of toxicology that juveniles are usually a thousand times more sensitive to the toxic effects of a chemical than a parent. These chemicals disrupt the symbiotic relationship between coral and algae … the coral larva envelops itself in its own skeleton, where it falls to the bottom of the sea and dies.
