Thousands of PSA members around New Zealand left work today in the first coordinated strike in the public service for many years.
More than 4,000 members at Inland Revenue (IR) and the Ministry of Commerce, Employment and Innovation (MBIE) staged a two-hour strike in the country's cities.
In Wellington, about 500 people marched in cold, rainy weather to tell their employers that they wanted a fair deal.
"For many of our members, it was the first time that they were participating in a protest – not to mention union action," says Glenn Barclay, PSA National Secretary.
"It was inspiring to see their enthusiasm and energy"
IR was forced to close some regional front-line offices and put up a separate number for people who support our members. " Mr. Barclay says. "
" We hope the action today gave them the opportunity to reflect. The demands of our members are extremely reasonable: a modest general increase in salaries and fair compensation systems.
Another work stoppage of two hours is scheduled for 23 July.
