While Sauvignon Blanc is New Zealand's best white grape, Pinot Noir may claim to be the best red because it has so much flavor. This example is ripe with cooked strawberries, juicy and not too dry. It's a moderate to clear color, perfect for Pinot Noir; and the dry, slightly raspy nose of cranberry and spicy orange is also suitable. This wine would marry well with many different types of tapas and is good enough to drink alone.

Piccini Memoro, was £ 8.50, now £ 7, Tesco until July 30. Memoro is a mix of not only different grapes of different origins in Italy but also of different vintages. Memoro, the Latin for "souvenir", was born of Italian pride. It has a warm and modern style with notes of black cherries, figs and coffee in a delicate oak frame. Generous on the palate, revealing a bright fruity core. It is harmonious and sweet with a long, dense finish. A real winner at the price.
