Crews wait for daylight to continue searching for the missing helicopter after oil spill, wreckage view

The search for a helicopter missing from being crashed near Wanaka was delayed until Sunday morning.

A police spokesman said the search and rescue teams had reached the wreckage before the search was canceled, but had not found a corpse.

The search was suspended due to darkness.



An oil slick and wreckage views at Lake Wanaka are all that was seen from the Robinson helicopter when it disappeared at 1:30 pm.

The helicopter, with just the pilot on board, was reported by a helicopter company to have disappeared from its tracking systems.



An oil slick 1km north of Stevenson Island and wrecks on the shore of the island. The area is at Stevensons Arm in the southeast corner of Lake Otago. It is understood that the area is not accessible by land.

Chris Henshaw, senior search and rescue officer with the New Zealand Rescue Coordination Center (RCCNZ), said three helicopters from the same company traced the trajectory of the missing plane. RCCNZ is currently working with the police, Coastguard NZ, a ground search and rescue team and two additional helicopters to expand the search area

Part of an Otago community was also grouped together to assist in the search. RCCNZ spokesman later said that the search was suspended overnight because it was too dark to continue searching.
