Slim Shady.
Fred the Needle.
Big Bird.
Johnny the Lips.
But not Wendy Frew – she gets an entire stadium named after her.
Veteran midcourter Steel will lead his team to his home for the last time next Wednesday for the finals of the ANZ Premiership.
She's going to do it at Wendy Frew Stadium. Southland Stadium has been renamed as a tribute to its efforts over 16 unprecedented seasons with Steel and its predecessor, Southern Sting.
Frew played a total of 174 games with steel and spur, but all good things must end.
Last month, she announced that she will retire at the end of the season.
Nigel Skelt, General Manager of Stadium Southland
& # 39; & # 39; Here's Wendy's house and she's played all her ball here since day one, "he said.
& # 39; & # 39; She has been a fantastic model not only for netball but also for sports in general. We believe it is an incredibly fitting tribute to the dedication, hard work and loyalty that she has always shown to our community. "
Frew said that she was humiliated by this gesture
". How are you doing? put into words what does a tribute like this mean? It's very humiliating, "she said. For me, this has always been the case for the team – it does not change to go into this game.
& # 39; & # 39; I am absolutely delighted to take part in the short with my teammates and have the intention of adopting it "
Skelt was expecting" an incredible amount of emotion " while the netball community was saying goodbye to Frew as a player.
"We know that it is only the end of a chapter of his sports trip. She is part of our family of stadiums and we are excited to see what the future holds for her.
Depending on the outcome of the last round robin tonight, the team will play either the Mystics or Tactix in the elimination final. A win will mean that steel will progress to the finals in which he will meet the Pulse at Palmerston North on August 12th.
The Steel won the title last season.
