A woman from Auckland is angry after being forced to leave the Sylvia Park shopping center for not wearing shoes.
Rachelle McDonald, of Panmure, told Things a security guard asked him to leave the mall for "not following the shopping center policy".
She accidentally left her shoes behind her as she rushed to use a computer.
The guard warned her that she could only come back if she put on shoes.
McDonald was shocked by the incident, saying that walking barefoot was an important part of his growing kiwi culture.
"People should have the opportunity to wear what they want on their feet, just as they have the right to wear the clothes they want," she said.
"A homeless person who does not wear shoes has just as much right to enter Pak's nSave at Sylvia Park … as any other."
Center director Sylvia Park, Susan Jamieson, said the mall did not have a policy requiring customers to wear shoes.
"However, we recommend that shoes be worn on travelators and escalators in the center."
Jamieson said some of the center's retailers may have their own policies regarding "the level of clothing required to enter their premises". A flawless stay
