Google recently announced – or rather discreetly update a YouTube help page from years ago – that all existing annotations created before the annotation editor's deletion would be deleted videos early next year.
In May 2017, Google removed the annotations editor because the creators had put an unreasonable amount of annotations on their videos. These colored blocks hindered the visualization and, frankly, they were laborious – the videos seemed disorganized and the popup windows were bothersome.
However, these annotations were a convenient way for video creators to advertise their other content, favorite products or whatever they wanted to share with their viewers.
In order to meet these needs in a less intrusive way, Google introduced the end – of – year cards and screens in 2016, which are still in use today. Cards are pop-up windows designed more neatly. They appear in the upper corner at designated points of a video. By tapping it, you open a menu of additional links, videos, polls, etc., in an organized manner.
Alternatively, the end screens are a fairly explicit interface option: users can choose which screen appears at the end of their video, which can present virtually anything they want to put in. obvious: chains, products, even more links.
Unlike annotations, these two solutions also work on the mobile platform and generate seven times more clicks on the platform. Annotations, on the other hand, were much more often closed than they were typed.
