The US manufacturer of electric vehicles Rivian confirmed the details regarding the first of two "electric adventure vehicles" capable of accelerating as fast as a supercar and whose production is confirmed before 2022.

Rivian seeks to upset Tesla by launching the world's first all-electric pickup truck, ahead of its established US-based competition.

The R1T will be a full-size, all-electric pickup with over 640 km of range and four-wheel drive AWD capabilities. The new van will be followed by a fully electric SUV – the R1S – which shares the same platform and the same electric motors.

"We are launching Rivian with two vehicles that reinvent the van and SUV segment," said Rivian founder and CEO, RJ Scaringe.

"Starting with a clean sheet, we have spent years developing technology to provide the ideal vehicle for active customers. This means excellent driving dynamics on any surface, on or off road, by providing loading solutions that can easily accommodate any type of equipment. "

The R1T pickup truck and the R1S SUV will be built on Rivian's "skateboard platform" that allows you to see the battery pack, electric motors, suspension, braking system and thermal under the height of the wheel.

Both models will also feature Rivian's new four-engine system, which delivers 147 kW of power to each wheel.

With 3500 Nm of ground torque per wheel (14 000 Nm for the complete vehicle), the R1T can reach 100 km / h in about 3 seconds and 160 km / h in less than 7 s.

According to Rivian, the electric powertrain and chassis allow a payload of 800 kg and a towing capacity of five tons. The empty weight of the pickup is 2670 kg.

"Our four-engine configuration is not just about gross power; this architecture provides instant torque with extremely precise control at every wheel, which changes the game from the point of view of dynamics, both on and off the road, "said the executive director of engineering and programs, Mark Vinnels.

The vehicle architecture also reaches a low center of gravity for better agility and stability.

Off-road references are enhanced by a double-wishbone suspension of unequal length at the front and a multi-link suspension at the rear.

The suspension features dynamic roll control, adaptive dampers, and adjustable air ride height suspension that adjusts the suspension for comfort, on-road performance, or off-road capability. On the road, the new pickup should incorporate some of the latest autopilot technology.

According to Rivian, the R1T will be launched with "a robust hardware suite with multiple modalities," including a camera, lidar, radar, ultrasound, and high-precision GPS coupled with high definition maps. Rivian says his equipment will support level 3 autonomy (steering wheel and off-road eyes) for highway operation.

The price of the R1T pickup is 61,500 USD (90,700 NZ). Production is expected to begin in late 2020 at the company's Illinois plant.
