About 40o0 households and businesses on Waiheke Island have been cut off from the internet.
The 9,000 inhabitants of Waiheke Island could be deprived of the Internet for at least several days, after a fiber optic cable connecting the island was damaged.
Network company Chorus said nearly 4,000 homes and businesses across the island had lost access to fiber-optic and copper broadband services around 3:00 pm Monday.

A cable cut at sea can take at least several days to repair.
Tests by Chorus technicians revealed a fault in Waiheke's Vector submarine cable about 1.5 km from the beach on Howick's harbor side, Chorus spokesman Steve said. Pettigrew.

"We are informed that there are no spare fibers available to transfer the services [and] we do not expect Waiheke broadband services to be restored tonight [Monday]," he said.
Pettigrew had previously stated that if the cable was cut to the ground, services would likely be restored within hours, but if the outage occurred at sea, services could be interrupted for at least "days".
It seems likely that a specialized vessel will be required to repair the cable, which belongs to Vector.
Mr. Pettigrew said that a breakdown on land or at sea "has a considerable impact on restoration times". Breakage of submarine cables is often caused by boat anchors lying on the sea floor.
Conventional fixed lines on the island worked as if they were served by a separate cable, but if residents used Internet telephony, they would be affected by the outage, he said.
Spark spokesman Anaru Tuhi said that five out of six mobile cell sites on the island were out of action.
