A corpse found on a beach on the west coast is missing Daniel McLellan-Skeggs jet boat.

Sergeant Paul Watson said the body was found by a fisherman near the mouth of the Waitaha River between Ross and Harihari on Wednesday morning.

Twenty-nine-year-old McLellan-Skeggs was reportedly taken away by a jet plane after a jet boat accident on the Taramakau River south of Greymouth on May 17.

Matt Rogatski, left, and Heath Bagnall helped rescue a man from the Taramakau River following the accident, but were unable to rescue Daniel McLellan-Skeggs.

Heath Bagnall and Matt Rogatski, Ahaura's helicopter pilot, were spraying grass for the Department of Conservation when they saw the boat roll over. They saved a man but could not save McLellan-Skeggs.

"I tried to grab [the man in the water] and missed his three-inch head, "Rogatski said.

"I tried to put my feet under his armpits but he did not have the strength to grab my legs and just slipped through. He just sagged."

Watson said the McLellan-Skeggs family wanted to thank all the volunteers and members of the public who had participated in the extensive research.
