The coach had closed down Dallam Street and overtook Warrington's Three Pigeons pub when he had been hit by three bricks.

Bricks are thought to have been thrown by young people in a side street.

The vehicle's exterior windows were broken and a hole was drilled in a metal panel outside the car due to the strength of one of the bricks.

Alan Turner of The George, the car's organizer, said, "We heard the three bricks, at first I thought it was a bottle of beer, then I realized it was broken glass.

"The coach stopped and we went out to see who was involved but they ran away."

A supporter said: "After the match, we boarded our coach, we were all happy to chat, we had just retired, one of the last coaches to leave, and we passed the pub furthest from the stadium., then there was a loud bang and the outer pane of the broken emergency window.

"Luckily the car had double glazed windows, that's the outside pane that was broken in. Fortunately, everyone aboard our car was fine and no child was traveling with us this time."

The coach has managed to bring back fans to St Helens.

The Saints defeated Warrington 30-12 Thursday in the match to record their third Super League win against the Wolves this season.

Cheshire police said they did not receive a report about the incident.
