We could forgive for having forgotten the long-standing plans for a film adaptation of the live action The 2001 novel by Eion Colfer Artemis Fowl, whereas studios are discussing the opportunity to develop it for almost 20 years at this stage.

But Artemis is finally approaching the big screen, which means it's high time to take stock of the strange and magical world of the series, fae folklore.

The interesting thing about a story like Artemis Fowl it is that Disney can draw infinitely many ways, while creating a story that unfolds somewhat differently than books. Judging by the few excerpts of complicated sequences presented in the first trailer, there is at least one little things from the first novel that seem to have been translated on the big screen.

For those who are not at all familiar with the story, or those who need to be recalled, here is a brief explanation:

Artemis Fowl

This one is a bit of a given.

By the author's own admission, the entire film of Artemis Fowl (described in the film by Ferdia Shaw) is that he is essentially a pre-teen link mean – which means he's smart, scary and above all, complicated. After the death of his billionaire father who amassed the fortune of their family through criminal activities, Artemis and his mother Angeline are on the brink of bankruptcy.

Angeline suffers from debilitating mental depression, leaving it to Artemis to determine how he could regain his family's fortune and give himself back the honor to the name Fowl. As the protagonist of any YA novel, Artemis is a extremely gifted child, but unlike most of his fictional peers, he is deeply aware of his gifts.

The kid is brilliant, excellent at creating fine art fakes and a fully-fledged talented criminal brain. He also has a loyal servant by his side, Domovoi Butler (Nonso Anozie), who enjoys intensive combat training and is willing to risk his life to protect Artemis.

The plan

After much research, Artemis explains that the best way to restore his family's status is … to steal it from the secret community of fairies and other magical creatures living beneath the surface of the Earth. The fairies of Artemis Fowl are a race of ancient but technologically advanced magical beings, who use all kinds of precautions to keep their existence secret from the humans who live there.

But Artemis and Butler manage to find a sprite addicted to alcohol who disguises himself as a human healer in Ho Chi Minh City and gets his hands on his copy of The people's booksacred book that all fairies carry with them and that contains the secrets of their magic and their society. Artemis deduces a plan to capture another fairy in the hope of keeping her hostage until he gets guaranteed access to gold in exchange for the fairy's freedom.

The fairies

What Artemis is not quite ready to face is the fact that the fairies with whom he has fun are not the type to frolic in a playful way in the forests in the moonlight. They are more like combat-ready and tech-savvy Wakandans trained to handle threats like him.

Like many Artemis FowlMagic creator Captain Holly Short (Lara McDonnell), an elf and the first female captain of the Lower Elements Police Recognition Division (LEPRecon, abbreviated), must periodically return to the surface to perform a special ritual that replenishes her . magical reserves.

After learning the ritual of The people's bookArtemis ambits and manages to capture Holly and the two embark on a game of harsh intelligence while waiting for the rest of LEPRecon's reaction. Downstairs, in the town of Haven, LEPRecon's commander, Root (played by Judi Dench in the film), is responsible for saving Holly with the help of Foaly, a centaur and technical advisor to the task force.

What really made the Artemis Fowl Books so captivating that Colfer, who built the world, took the time to put it in the book, and that's what will make or break the film. All the basics of a magical and action-packed plot are present, but what Disney is really going to have to do is turn everything into a kind of show that will draw spectators into the theaters.

Artemis Fowl will arrive in theaters in August 2019.
