A helicopter moves away from the scene of the bus accident that injured several people on the way to Turoa skifield.

A horror explosion that threw the Ruapehū skiers off their bus has now claimed a life.

The bus that was traveling on Ross Copland Road, General Manager of Ruapehū Alpine Lifts, stated that the bus had overturned at the 9-kilometer mark on Ōhakune Mountain Rd, which extends for 17 km until Tūroa. The accident occurred just after 2:30 pm on Saturday

The bus had 31 people on board – and about 20 were injured, at least four of them with moderate or severe injuries.

Twenty people, including children, were treated for injuries. Three were flown to Waikato Hospital.

A 31-year-old woman was in critical condition. A 20-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman were stable

The road was closed for four hours while emergency services helped the injured and cleaned the debris.

There were about 1500 people skiing and snowboarding on Tūroa on Saturday, and it is thought that 1000 of them were stranded at the top of the mountain until shortly before 8 pm
