A large number of dementia patients are prescribed inappropriate medications – which could kill them – 29-Nov-2018

A study from the University of Otago found that 40% of patients with dementia were prescribed anticholinergics to control certain symptoms of Parkinson's disease.

Lead researcher Dr. Sharmin Bala says drugs are often prescribed inappropriately – and can do more harm than good.

She says side effects may include a greater risk of falls, delirium, a decline in cognitive function and even death.

Bala says his team hopes to develop a tool that will help prevent inappropriate prescriptions – but it's also up to health care providers to make a change.
