New Zealand firefighter and emergency team leader Carlos Dempsey said 11 fire trucks and several support units had been called from as far as Palmerston North and New Plymouth – "in all the show "- to fight the fire on Saturday night.

It was not known at 11 pm if anyone was trapped in the building, but one person was taken to hospital with severe burns, said Dempsey.

But most of the fires had been extinguished and crews had wetted the hot spots before searching the building.

Fire investigators were on hand to determine the cause of the fire, Dempsey said.
