Faculty members at an American university in the suburbs of Detroit have received hockey pucks and are trained to use them to thwart active shooters.
Oakland University, a public school in Rochester Hills, has distributed pucks to its 800 members.
University police chief Mark Gordon says that to fight effectively, faculty and students must be prepared to throw heavy objects that can cause distraction.

Oakland University has purchased 2,500 hockey pucks for distribution to staff and students.
Gordon said at Detroit Free Press these washers were an "impulsive idea of the moment that seemed to match the bill" and can easily be carried in briefcases or backpacks.

While coaching youth ice hockey, Gordon stated that he had already been hit in the head with a puck, which gave him the idea that small black disks could be used as a self defense tool.
The teachers' union, which has purchased 2,500 hockey pucks, is collaborating with student groups to distribute 1,700 other pucks to students.
The school organizes several training sessions a year, which consist of "running, hiding, fighting," with the emphasis on flight as a top priority.
Gordon added that fighting with a hockey puck should be "one last absolute strategy".
