Yacht clubs have until the end of the day to register and participate in the 2021 event, but some who have paid the $ 1.5 million fee will still be refused.

The number of opposing teams will determine the number of bases to build on the Auckland waterfront and the number of people visiting the City of Sails.

Three teams have already been confirmed: Italian Luna Rossa, American New York Ross Club and INEOS Team UK.

Each bid must be reviewed by the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, the club behind the America's Cup campaigns in New Zealand, to ensure their legitimacy.

Team New Zealand's chief operating officer Kevin Shorebridge said that eight potential challengers had interested him, in addition to the three accepted candidates.

He added that there will be a lot of interest in the number of successful candidates.

And the teams have to be serious enough if they want to make an offer to participate – it costs almost $ 1.5 million to apply, and an additional $ 1.5 million if they are accepted.

"I think that even getting to the point where you come in is probably a good quality team, you know, we had six [challengers] in Bermuda, including Oracle.

"Before, in San Francisco, we only had three, so we're pretty happy with what we have now, but it's great to be able to increase that number."

Peter Lester, a passionate yachting enthusiast, said he had heard of nominations from teams from Italy, the United States, China, Norway and, in the last 48 hours , from a participation of the Netherlands.

This would be the first time that a Dutch team is participating in the America's Cup.

"Simeon Tienpont is the skipper and of course he has won two America's Cups, both with Oracle.

"So he knows the game, he knows it very well, and I think the Dutchman could have legs because of the strength of his shipping industry and his great sailors."

Lester said some of the teams that would have applied would have hired new staff – a positive sign of their chances of being accepted.

He said that Ben Ainslie's British team was chosen for the best challenger, but that the New Zealand team was still his favorite.

"Team New Zealand, I think, is going to be very, very hard to beat here in Auckland."

Teams have until 5 pm today to receive their nominations.
