A woman from Upper Hutt described the terrifying moment when the bus she was driving after crashing into Tongariro National Park yesterday, killing one person.
Fenella Murphy was one of 28 passengers on board at the time of the fatal incident. "We had just got off the Turoa ski area and, I think about five minutes into the ride, this emergency horn sound came in." I know where it came from, but I think that it alarmed everyone, "says Murphy.
" Every time the driver brakes, it makes a strange noise and we know something is wrong.
"We were just picking up speed and rolling so fast down for about 30 seconds, probably more, just speeding up and then we had to hit the edge of a bank or as a barrier or something.
"Then we returned and rolled and landed on the side, I"
One person was killed and several others were injured after the crash of a bus in Tongariro National Park, Ohakune.

Police confirmed that a young woman was killed when the bus drove into Tongariro National Park yesterday.
In a statement issued by the police this afternoon, an official identification was in progress. A St John spokesman says that patient updates are particularly difficult because of the nature of the incident with patients "scattered" across the country in five different hospitals
Lydia Aydon, door of Waikato DHB. NEWS this morning that three patients took to Waikato Hospital – a 20-year-old man and two women aged 29 and 31.
They are all in stable condition.
Turoa skifield is closed today for a debriefing and is expected to open tomorrow.
The bus was removed and taken to Whanganui for examination
