Beautiful Boy (RP16, 112 mins) Directed by Felix Van Groeningen ★★ ½
In 2005, The New York Times Magazine published a moving and honest article by writer David Sheff.
My son addicted caused a small sensation and eventually led to a complete memory of Sheff's years as a parent of an addict. Handsome boy is an adaptation of this memoir.
The writer Luke Davies (Lion) and director Felix Van Groeningen (who realized the extraordinary beauty Break in the broken circle) corrected and sanitized Sheff's story a bit. But Handsome boy always remains a dignified and intelligent look at methamphetamine and heroin addiction, and in particular how dependency can be imposed on all levels of society.
You can say that making a film about an addict who still has an affluent and loving family in which to go back, like David's son, Nick, is to make a Titanic movie, but only show people with access to lifeboats . . This is a valid point. But I have seen the "authentic" and "brave" films about addiction that regularly make the list of the best critics. They are almost unassailable and do not change anything.

And this cleansed and friendly drug abuse story is at least, perhaps inadvertently, reminiscent of the sheer madness and cruelty of criminalizing drug use and thus drug addiction. We might as well ban fear and loneliness. In fact, that's exactly what we did.
Handsome boy is quite inflexible about the mechanics of sniffing and injection. But it escapes us well to show us the physical balance. Timothée Chalamet (Call me by your name) is not unconvincing like Nick, but it never seems that a modeling agency would abandon him on sight. As dad David, Steve Carell adds another decent line to his resume "Roles Rights". Carell – when the slightly crushed dialogue allowed – almost shut down the shock of guilt and resentment that Sheff's original article sings.

The actor Timothee Chalamet recounts his experience in the shooting of Beautiful Boy, his latest film that could see him nominated for an Oscar.
A cameo from Andre Royo, who played Bubbles in Thread, just remind us of the isolated experience of addiction Handsome boy represent.
The overloaded and flashback distracting structure is not helpful and often dispels the tension and fear that a more conventional chronology would have allowed to build.
Handsome boy is an attractive and always viewable film. But given the ugliness of his subject, I'm not sure it's a recommendation.
