Horticulture New Zealand wants participants for a competition of young fruit growers in Gisborne next week.
He will be at Kaiaponi Packhouse at noon on Thursday. The HortNZ Young Fruit Grower regional winners and two Young Vegetable Grower winners will continue to compete for the Young Grower of the Year 2018 Napier on August 21-22.
Gisborne's event organizers said that things were going well, but that the event was to be broadcast to producers, suppliers and related organizations.
There will be two groups of competitions.
One of them is a fully eligible young farmer who must be 30 years old or younger, be able to go abroad when he is selected, Work in the industry and give a speech at dinner.
The second is a versatile apprentice (young or old). It will be an open event where participants can complete challenges and practice tests. There is no speech required and no age restrictions.

Kaiaponi's general manager, Scott Wilson, said the event was excellent for the industry.
He hoped that the owners would support the event.

"It's an opportunity to educate Gisborne fruit growers to the community and highlight the career opportunities in our industry."

Last weekend, Gisborne's wife, Lisa Arnold, an orchard operations assistant at Bostock NZ, was named Young Fruit Grower of Hawke's Bay in 2018.
Participants made a series of practical and theoretical challenges designed to test the skills needed to operate a successful orchard.
Lisa, the first woman to win the Hawke's Bay test and the first organic winner since 2011, said she was incredibly proud.
"It's a real privilege to represent young women and organic producers in our industry."
