Carpet for a wet and windy weekend in the south

Strong strong winds, heavy rain and possibly snow showers are about to leave tomorrow.

MetService announced that strong winds have been forecast for Otago, Southland and Fiordland on Friday and Saturday. They were heading north, also reaching the High Country of Canterbury on Saturday

Strong winds were also blowing over the coastal areas of Canterbury, Marlborough and Wellington and Wairarapa on the North Island on Saturday

Within 24 hours from 21h Friday, 120mm to 160mm of rain were forecast, with the heaviest falls expected around noon Saturday

It will be cold, windy and rainy also for Dunedin, Queenstown, Wanaka, Alexandra , Oamaru and Invercargill.

MetService warned that heavy rains can quickly increase water courses and rivers. Surface floods and slips have also been possible and driving conditions can be dangerous.

On Sunday, cold westerlies could bring snow flurries to 500 meters in the southern part of the island.
