Christchurch Post Shop on Stanmore Rd may soon be the latest in New Zealand

While the New Zealand Post is closing local post offices across the country, a tiny operation in Christchurch could turn the tide.

The Stanmore Rd Post Office is almost entirely run by a team of volunteers who say they do not go anywhere.

This is the mail made in the old days, with letters sorted by hand and locals serving the locals.

"This neighborhood has a number of seniors and people with disabilities or low income, and it's a really critical place where they can come," said Jenny Smith, coordinator of Te Whare Roimata Trust, which runs the store.

The last operator retired and could not sell the store and appealed for help. Ms. Smith responded and kept the store open with her group of passionate postal volunteers.

"Great place my brother, I come here every week and send seafood to my dad," a customer told Newshub.

"You kind of create friendships and relationships."

The New Zealand Post will close the remaining 79 stores across the country, wrapping them in banks, bookstores and pharmacies.

This means that Linwood could be the only remaining local post office in the country, thanks to its 16 volunteers.

"The locals come here and they are very friendly and warm," said Qiong Ge, a volunteer at the post office, at the Stanmore Rd post.

Mrs. Smith says that they will be fine because the store pays its own fees.

"Our understanding is that we will not be affected," she says.

The service should continue normally, sent with a smile, to the Stanmore Rd post shop.
