A "moderate" earthquake struck Canterbury and was felt by more than 7,000 people, GeoNet reported.
The magnitude 4.0 earthquake struck 10 kilometers east of Christchurch, off New Brighton Beach,
It was centered about 12 kilometers underground
Within minutes, more 7000 people had evaluated the strength of the tremor, most of them classified as light or moderate.
