JACKSON, Michigan (AP) – Thousands of harness racing fans flock to a southern Michigan runway to say goodbye before the demolition of the 70-year track. The Jackson Citizen Patriot reports that Jackson Harness Raceway celebrated its last hurray on Sunday by hosting a dozen horse races. The track was closed for 10 years but reopened this weekend so that community members could say goodbye before the planned demolition.

The co-organizer Mike Way says that up to 7000 people attended the event. Way says he's seen a lot of tears from people with a passion for the sport.

Brenda Friend worked as a cashier at the raceway. She realized her dream of taking a walk around the track in a Sunday basket.

Friend says that harness racing is a family event. She says that children who are growing up now do not know what they are missing.
