There have been some major changes to the Avios system in recent years that have meant that your points are not quite as good or that they are more difficult to win in the first place.
But the airline miles system is not worth it to give up, especially if you know how to spend your points.
We calculated the numbers and developed the tips to stretch your points as far as possible.
British Airways: The Avios Loyalty System has long been popular
The First thing to consider is when to reserve your seat.
Each BA flight has a number of Avios seats reserved in advance.
Rob Burgess, editor of the frequent travelers website Head to Points explains, "There is a guarantee of two business seats and four economy seats per BA flight. These appear exactly 355 days before departure, when the flight opens for booking.
"It is very likely that more seats will be released over time, including First Class seats and World Traveler Plus. Day, the only guarantee is the book 355 days in advance.
So, to guarantee the seats, you must be on the ball, but keep checking if others are released if the first batch has already been recovered.
If you know that a BA sale is likely on the horizon, you may need to delay the booking, you will have to weigh up to how much you think the route is likely to be taken by another traveler.
Short distance from long distances
Traditionally, Avios is a popular way for people to get free flights to Europe.
You need a minimum of 8,000 points or more for the nearest destinations, such as London to Amsterdam, Paris or Prague. [19659002] This is much more feasible for low-level users using Avios. Linked credit cards or those who earn points on the flights that the 40,000 needed per person to travel to New York or Dubai.
Also, cashing your Avios for long-haul flights will usually cost you less. This is largely due to the cost of taxes, which for long-haul flights typically cost 300 pounds or more. Often, travelers will be able to find cheap tickets that cost less, or only slightly more than these taxes, getting you much less value in effect from your points.
A quick example:
A return to Paris booked six months in advance currently costs £ 109.40 (£ 59.40 in taxes) or 8,000 Avios points plus £ 35 in taxes.
Exchanging your points earns you about 1p per Avios if you also include tax savings.
Compare that to a flight back to a more distant location, such as New York, where our flight example cost £ 559.41 or £ 26,000 Avios (taxes were very similar for both.)

Buy a one-way ticket with many airlines and you will pay through the nose. This is certainly true with BA on long-haul flights.
Airlines generally want to dissuade travelers from flying for a long-haul flight or for more expensive airlines, as it is easier for them to plan their flights.
Of course, if you pay in cash, you can simply buy a cheaper return ticket and only use half of it in some cases.
Most airlines indicate in the terms and conditions that if you do not use the outgoing part of your return, they will cancel the second flight, so for this to work you have to use the outgoing leg and not the return.
And sometimes, if you're traveling on business or visiting a variety of different places, it's hard to avoid booking a single trip. In these cases, it might be useful to use your Avios to buy a seat because technically compared to the ticket price you get exceptional value.
For example, buy an off-peak flight to Cape Town six months in advance and you will pay £ 1,673.41 (£ 227.41 in taxes) while a return will cost you £ 677.01 (£ 358.01 in taxes) for the same dates
For the same trip, you can cash 16,250 Avios plus 193.87 £ taxes, while a return costs 41,250 Avios and 227,41 £ taxes
If you do the math on this one, each Avios for the unique trip here is worth a whopping 8.69p, while on the return trip it's 0.75p by Avios.
This example gives you exceptional value, but you will not always get this high value from your Avios on all outbound trips, so check the cost before booking.
On short-haul flights, you can also find one. Round-trip tickets are much cheaper because BA competes with the competition of low-cost airlines.
Off-Peak Notes Save a Pack
This sounds like an obvious tip, but it can have a huge impact on the real value of your points.
When you go through the booking process, off-peak tickets are displayed with a green mark in the calendar corner on the Avios British Airways Executive Club website, but to check during the planning process, there are makes a schedule that you can view off the peak dates on the site.

Is it worthwhile to trade Avios for upgrades?
The advantage of the upgrade is difficult to measure. The purchase of a flight with airmiles gives you something for nothing, while spending points to improve a flight that you have already booked in cash, gives you a slice of luxury.
