A man is on the run after allegedly firing a knife during an argument in an isolated beach community, leaving a wounded.

Police have now shot cords on the small community of Himatangi Beach, west of Palmerston North, but still looking for the man, said a police spokeswoman.

Initially, residents were told to stay indoors, as the team of armed offenders was sent to the community on Sunday morning. Officers were called in the area at 10:20 am after a man was injured and injured during a dispute, she said.

The man was not seriously injured, but "will need stitches" in his hand. He was receiving medical treatment and talking to the police about the incident.

Officers had started to inquire and wanted to talk to anyone who could have seen the incident.

"If you see someone who looks a little suspicious and may be carrying a knife, call the police," said the spokeswoman.

A resident who called Stuff earlier said that Himatangi Beach Rd between the colony and State Highway 1 had been cordoned off by police, and no one could enter or exit.
