The final whistle and New Zealand's brilliant run at the Under-17 World Cup go hand in hand. Spain simply smothered the NZ out of this match with dominance in the possession of the crew and in the end, it converted to the opportunities it could create. NZ is not done though. They will play in the bronze medal game later this week. That's all we did in Montevideo this morning. Have a good day.

SAVE! Wisnewski is intercepted and immediately launches a solo counterattack. She enters the area to defend against Aixa but fails to get a net shot with all the pressure. In the end, he dribbles to the Spanish goalkeeper for an easy save.

SAVE! The best attack of the NZ in the second half is foiled. A perfectly balanced pass from Cunningham-Lee is there for Hahn in the area but Spain's goalkeeper has read it well and is being forced to stop it. Hahn goes for the shot but he is deflected and navigates to the touch. NZ throwing the kitchen sink at this now.

SAVE! NZ recovers the ball and attacks on the left edge with Cunningham-Lee. She gets to know Abbott who pulls a good one out of the box. It's on target but pretty easy to read for a backup.

Spain stirs the clock as the four backs of the ball pass the ball to kill the clock.

Another change for Spain. The attacker Salma is off and the Aixa defender is activated – indicates what Spain is trying to do from here.

Recent changes for New Zealand. Pratt replaces Jenkins and Cunningham-Lee replaces Brown.

Spain has a corner corner but can not do much with that and it's a goal kick for New Zealand. Striker Lopez leaves for Spain and Arana for her.

Spain launches a counter-attack deep in its half and fires a long ball in the left corner. Navarro is very competitive with the Mackay-Wright, but the Kiwi gets there and puts it in contact.

Spain is promising with a ball towards the NZ surface but the flag rises to stop it. Replays show that it was a certain offside. New Zealand has 21 minutes to remedy the situation.

A superb NZ counter-attack as Rennie rushes to the left with a lot of space in front of her. She is face to face with Tejada when she reaches the box. Finally, go around and put a cross to get support. It was returned to her and she hit it but it is not clear and the goal has not passed. New Zealand has given everything except Spain, strong at the back.

Stopping the game as one of the Spanish players is interrupted after a heavy collision. It will be the NZ ball just outside its box when the game will resume after Spain intercepted the NZ throw-in earlier and cleared it.

NZ passes a ball in the right wing and sits well, but Spain gets there first and touches the fingertip. New Zealand is getting closer to the box of Spain.

Another well-worked Spanish game allows them to enter the New Zealand penalty area, but three defenders are present to silence him and close him. Another release. It's nice to see that Spain continues to attack and maintain the tempo instead of closing shop.

Spain wins a corner corner and fire in but he sails too deeply. The New Zealand defense is clear, but Spain dominates the ball at the present time – 68%. New Zealand needs to change something here if they want to come back in this game.

First change in New Zealand. Hahn is for Fraser.

SAVE! Spain is back on the attack as it attacks right again. One-one-one and Leat charge to stop it. Gets the deviation and sends it to a corner. Well done by the keeper of the Kiwis. She follows him a few moments later with a much easier save.

PUT ESP! Irene Lopez strikes wonderfully Spain. Mackay-Wright reads well and goes away. A much better release but Lopez is just waiting outside the box. Hit the fly brilliantly and curve away from Leat to hit the right post and enter. Do not stop this. Superb strike.

New Zealand is likely to do it early, while Jenkins is to the right of a balloon. She is in the box but the ball is a little too far ahead and she can not hit cleanly. Another easy backup.

Halftime and Spain are heading to the hangars at the front. A fierce first half on both sides. Spain possessed the bulk of possession, but New Zealand was more likely than Pina's goal to be achieved. New Zealand will have to stay on the tight defensive on its left wing as this seems to be the place where Spain wants to play. At the attack, their chances are winning but they just miss the final shot. In addition to Fraser's strike on the crossbar, finishes have been easy until now. We'll be back soon to see if New Zealand can reverse the situation!

NZ gets a free kick just outside Spain 's penalty box. The kick comes and Abbott is here for that, just like the goalkeeper of Spain. The pair collides and the goalkeeper holds on to stop the attack.

Spain now holds the ball and is looking to build something in the back. There are only a few minutes left for New Zealand to fight back, but Spain is not making it easy with his passes.

PUT ESP! Spain is relentless and finally finds the breakthrough! It takes three passes in less than a minute, but Pina finally finds a chance and places it at the back of the net. Navarro pulled in a center from the right, which Mackay-Wright read well, but his head was not clear enough and Pina took advantage. Solid strike and Spain are in the lead.

SAVE! New Zealand falls to the ground and attacks from the left. Jenkins has it and aims the goal but there is not a lot of power behind and it's an easy backup.

Spain is attacking again on the right wing but is shooting in a center this time. Pina gets it and gets the hang of it. He beats Leat but sails just off the right post. Both sides of the business opportunities here.

Spain has a chance now that Barry is penalized for a handball right in front of the New Zealand penalty area right. The kick comes, but Mackay-Wright reads it and removes it. Spain is trying a shot of desperation from the outside and is sailing high up.

SAVE! Another NZ attack on the right seems promising as Rennie goes into space. She takes it to the box and sends it back to Fraser. Fraser lets rip and it the goalkeeper JUST puts his finger on it to tilt it up and hit the crossbar! NZ unlucky not to take the lead there. A brilliant shot by Fraser.

SAVE! NZ returns to the attack while a pass passes behind the Spanish line on the right. Rennie is here for that and takes it in the box. She has players in the middle but is shooting. It's on target but saved quite easily.

New Zealand's first chance comes as Rennie pursues a shot in the box. She is challenged but gets the kickoff and he is deflected for a corner corner.

Spain finally attacks by the left wing and finds itself in the surface with Salma. Mittendorff arrives with an excellent tackle and retrieves the ball for New Zealand to clear. The New Zealand defense continues to delay the Spanish advance.

Spain persists with the attack by the right. Navarro is one-on-one with Barry and Barry makes a brilliant stop. Navarro then grabbed his shirt to stop a counter and let a free-kick go. Probably did not like being arrested so effectively!

NZ gets a free kick almost halfway. Mittendorff sends him and he is picked up by Brown just outside the box. She turns around and raises a ball in the air towards the goal. It's close but just off the right post! Much closer than the Spanish goalkeeper thought so too …

Good individual work from Mittendorff reports to a New Zealander corner corner. The kick is wide and Spain intercepts it. But Kiwis exert pressure and impose a turnover. Start near the goal of Spain.

The corner kick clears the target and NZ gets a kick from the head. Excellent work from Leat up to now.

SAVE! Another good shot for the right wing is putting Navarro face to face with Leat. Leat goes out and dives at the ball for a clean challenge, sending him dead. Navarro is touched in the game and remains on the ground looking for the penalty but the referee corner corner.

Spain is attacking again on the right wing, but Mittenforff continues the hunt and closes with a big challenge to the key. Get the ball and Barry kicks. Spain persists on the right and wins a corner corner. He enters but Leat reads it well and takes a clean hold.

Spain has their first chance of the match with a nice pass spun across the NZ line near the surface. But the next shot is just too much weight and Leat is here to pick it up. New Zealand responds immediately by the right wing and fires in a cross that the Spanish keeper intercepts. Both times do not hold back early.

The first Spanish attack on the right wing is thwarted by Brown, who returns to help his defenders and gets the interception. NZ throws a counterattack and Jenkins is in the near-goal space with the ball coming but the flag is rising! Replays show she was half a meter offside.

An early error of Spain when a kick flew over and hit the depths of their territory. Early nerves or just getting used to the conditions? The NZ throws itself into the left wing and attacks, forcing a corner kick! The first chance sails and is deflected. Fiery start.

We are on our way to Montevideo! Spain makes us leave.

It's raining in Montevideo and nothing seems easier. 18 degrees on the ground. A light wind of 11 km / h is also blowing on the ground.

The Under-17 Football Ferns will look to build on their historic momentum at this year's World Cup, but they will face strong opposition to La Roja this morning.

After putting an end to Japan's undefeated 15-match series in the epic quarterfinal, the Kiwi's outsiders face off against Spain to qualify for the final.

They have already marked history and taken the step so far – the deepest of a New Zealand football team to have competed at a World Cup – but the team is confident of being able to go even further.

Captain Aneka Mittendorff and goalkeeper Anna Leat said at TVNZ1's breakfast earlier this week that the team had embraced their shootout victory against the Asian giants, but remained composed.

"We are still focused and rooted," said Mittendorff.

"We are just going to keep up the positive waves that are currently occurring in the campaign."

Leat added that they knew they would face a daunting challenge in Spain, but they were used to the underdog label.

"New Zealand is generally [underdogs] so we are pretty happy, I think everyone is comfortable enough with this title and this only adds to the joy of this result when you get these results. "

Football Ferns reached the round of 16 after coming out of Group A with impressive wins over Finland (1-0) and Uruguay (2-1). They suffered a 2-0 defeat against Ghana in their last group match.

Spain are undefeated so far in the tournament after going through Group D with a win over South Korea (4-0) and Canada (5-0) and a 1-1 draw against Colombia. They beat North Korea on penalties in the quarterfinals to prepare for the match today.

In the last three editions of the Under-17 World Cup, Spain have won all three matches, defeating the Football Ferns in the overall standings 8-1.
