Traffic delays are "completely foolish" after an accident on Highway 1 in North Auckland
. On Sunday, a car struck a power pole 500 meters south of Warkworth Township. One person was taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure, a police spokeswoman said.
The road was closed just south of the intersection with McKinney Road, the NZTA announced.
However, although the road was partially reopened, five hours later at noon, the NZTA warned that there were still significant delays and encouraged people to avoid the area or to delay their trip
. Jenene Crossan responded to NZTA's tweet and said that she was stuck in traffic in the area for an hour and that she had walked a little over a kilometer
Crossan said : "It's an absolute madness. There is a huge tail to the north but practically no cars heading south, but at the same time … We are at an hour wait and have traveled 1 , 1 km. "
A detour is available via SH16 and Woodcocks Road.
Warkworth is often chokepoint for traffic during vacation periods.
