Kiwis will see red this July while the night sky provides two rare astrological events.

Over the next two months, Mars will be brighter and bigger than usual, offering Kiwis their best look at the red planet.

Mars and Earth align every two years, but this year is special because Mars will be at its closest to us since 2003.

The celestial event occurs just about all the 17-year-old, and while it will not be as close as last time – the closest Mars has come to Earth in 60,000 years – it promises to be an exciting sight.

The best opportunity to see Mars at its most impressive will be from July 27 to July 31, where according to NASA, it will be 57.6 million kilometers from Earth.

Stardome will host events in July and August to celebrate the event with his Zeiss telescope open for long hours.

New Zealanders will also have the longest lunar eclipse of the 21st century, which is expected on July 28th.

The total eclipse, which lasts about two hours, occurs when the Sun, Moon and Earth align.
