Meet Targa, the new canine police officer from New Zealand

Officer Tim Roy and his 3-year-old police dog Targa graduated from the New Zealand Police Dog Training Center on June 14th.

Const Roy got Targa about six months ago, after the departure of his manager. His previous dog, South, who appeared in The Star in November 2016, with Const Roy, went to another handler.

Targa had to pass "all kinds of assessments" before graduation, which involved follow-up, research, obedience and control, Const said Roy

She attended her first job Monday night and Const Roy was very happy with the way it went.

"I was really happy with the way she started."

Const Roy said that he liked being a dog handler and that he could not imagine doing anything else.

"When I joined the police, I never thought I was going"

Being a dog handler was a sought-after role, so he felt lucky to be in charge. to be one.

"I am happy to do it.

He had a good chance of catching a delinquent with a police dog, he said.

"It's fantastic."
