Michael Schumacher may "feel that loving people surround him," said a German archbishop.

Archbishop Georg Gänswein spoke of his moving visit to Schumacher in 2016, where he spent time at the bedside of the Formula One champion.

Schumacher was seriously injured in the brain when he fell in 2013, in the French Alps, with his 14-year-old son Mick, before being taken to the hospital to undergo several major surgeries. .

He spent the next six months in a coma and is now believed to be receiving 24-hour care from a team of 15 doctors in his luxury home in Switzerland.

The 62-year-old Catholic leader said that Schumacher's appearance had not changed much since the ski accident and that he thought he could feel the love around him. .

"I sat in front of him, took my hands and looked at him," said the Archbishop Bild. "His face is, as we all know, the typical face of Michael Schumacher, he has become a little more complete.

"He feels that loving people are around him, caring for him and, thank God, keep the audience too curious.

"I included Michael Schumacher and his family in my prayers."

Earlier this week, Mick revealed the "best moments" he had with his father, describing him as his "idol" in an emotional interview.

Mick, now European Champion of Formula 3, revealed that his father, aged 49, had played a key role in encouraging him to race.

Schumacher raced in Formula 1 for Jordan Grand Prix, Benetton, Mercedes and Ferrari, where he spent most of his career.
