A major development is to be created for the "most vulnerable" of Auckland, announced today the Minister of Housing, Phil Twyford.

Two hundred and eighty new apartments will be built at the Grays Ave site in central Auckland, which will include "wraparound" services to support residents.

It will replace 87 units on the same site.

According to Mr. Twyford, it is estimated that 500 people are currently sleeping in central Auckland, the new apartments aimed at ensuring stability.

"Having a permanent home gives people the safe and stable environment they need to cope with the factors leading to their homelessness such as mental health issues and addictions," said Mr. Twyford.

"Sustained living is an internationally proven way to house and support chronically homeless people, or those with complex needs."

The 280 apartments are included in the 6,400 residences that the government plans to build. the next four years.

Radio New Zealand reports that the building should be completed by 2021.
