"It took a lot of hard work, passion and commitment to get here, so getting here and doing what we did is just phenomenal."

The team consisted of eight Kiwis who competed in seven races to win the title.

The races were made up of real scenarios and the competitors had to make a tube rescue, a mass rescue and a simple rescue.

The co-captain and IRB driver for men Shane Edwards, of Sunset Beach Lifeguard Service in Port Waikato, described the unreal experience.

"In fact, I'm just speechless, I can not believe it yet, but it was so special to be able to run with family and friends and know that all our efforts and sacrifices paid off. "
