New Zealand grants paid leave to victims of domestic violence

New Zealand passed a law Wednesday that gives victims of domestic violence 10 days of paid leave to realize their living situation. The bill passed 63-57. The country has high rates of domestic violence, with one case being reported to the police every four minutes. The bill was led by MP Jan Logie. "Part of this initiative is to get a response from the whole society, we do not just leave it to the police, but we realize that we all have a role to play in helping the victims. change the cultural norms and say "we all have an interest in this and it's not OK." Opponents argued that leave would be costly for small businesses and would discourage businesses to hire people who they believe to be victims of family violence.The bill will come into effect in April.It says that anyone who is a victim of domestic violence will have 10 days off and will have better access to other safety precautions such as changing his place of work and e-mail address.
