Taking regular dietary supplements has also uncovered liver damage.

In February, health authorities reported 14 cases of liver damage related to Arthrem and other products containing Artemisia annua extract.

The Ministry of Health said that since then, 11 other reports have been submitted, some of them reporting serious damage.

He said people should be aware of the risks of taking the products.

Medsafe suggests that people should consult a doctor if they feel sick, have stomach pains, pale stools, dark urine, general itching, yellow eyes or skin.

Since liver damage has been reported, the ministry said most patients were either cured or in the process of improvement.
