The foldable phones arrive and the Chinese handset maker, Oppo, is the last to join the fray. A product manager for the company confirmed on the Dutch technological site Tweakers Oppo will bring a foldable smartphone to the Mobile World Congress next February.
No details were provided on the specifications or even on a release date. It is therefore quite possible that it is a prototype and that it is not ready for sale. But we know that Oppo is interested in this area. The company has patented a number of folding phone models in recent years, including a device that folds out twice to triple the size of its screen.
Oppo will join a number of phone manufacturers who have decided that foldable screens will be the next big thing in mobile phones. Samsung has already introduced its first folding screen with an Infinity Flex display (expected to go on sale in March 2019 at an incredible price); Huawei has already launched its own foldable phone. and Lenovo and Xiaomi made fun of their own prototypes. Importantly, Google has given its blessing to this new wave of foldable devices with official support of Android for their changing display.
It remains to be seen whether foldable phones will or will not prove to be a legitimate trend. But for businesses looking for attention in the competitive mobile sector, the opportunity to get on the bandwagon is too good to miss.
