Journalists from Bay of Plenty Times took the opportunity to sample the winning pie earlier today to see just how much better pie in New Zealand really is, writes Kiri Gillespie.

There is usually no shortage of reporters wanting to taste food, and of course we have had three – John Cousins, Peter Williams, and myself.

Our colleague who was going to Patrick's Pies Cafe in Bethlehem waiting for a new batch to be cooked because the store was already full – and the news had not even been announced yet .

Soon, the sweet and tasty smell of the pie crust was floating in the newsroom and the flakes of The Golden Dough soon fell on plates as we all began to understand why this pie was so winner.

Immediately, dense roast pork filling stretched by creamy mushrooms, cheese and a handful of caramelized onions. in the bakery showed this pie That meant business. The garnish consisted of generous pieces of meat and slices of mushrooms that winked at you. (Did I mention that I really like mushrooms?)

Then you notice the flavor. First, the tender pork completed with a strong taste of creamy mushrooms. After a few seconds you will notice the sweetness of the caramelized onions that entangle the flavor of the pie on your palate

This is, in my opinion, a pie to take your time and enjoy it. (Did I mention that I really like pies?)

Cousins said the pie had a great consistency, real pieces of meat "and I thought it was a good combination of flavors. "

" This is certainly not a pie; Cousins said the pie, though a salty pie, had a sweet soft voice.

Williams noticed on the light dough and generous filling. He also said that the pie had a good flavor

We evaluated the solid pie at 9.5, 9 and 9.5 out of 10.

We probably ate the cake in as many seconds. It was a delicious recipe
