I have to give it back to Nintendo, nobody gets the better of nostalgia than them. This year, they are tackling Pokemon Let's Go Pikachu & Eevee, a new representation of Pokemon Yellow, one of the first generation Pokemon games. Using the classic formula and modifying it slightly with aspects of the very popular Pokemon GO, Let's Go offers a very different experience from its predecessors.
When the Nintendo Switch was revealed, I was delighted to finally be able to get a console level Pokemon title after so long. Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness and Pokemon Colosseum were my jam in the day and I could not wait for the next generation of Pokemon to arrive on a proper console. Things did not go as planned while the developers, Game Freak, had explained earlier this year that the Generation 8 would come out in 2019 and that we would have for 2018 Pokemon Let's Go Pikachu & Eevee. The first impressions of the games were not good, as hardcore fans of Pokemon expected something different. The game looked like a simplified version of Generation 1 games, but we were wrong.
Pokemon Let's Go Pikachu & Eevee are modern remakes of Pokemon Yellow with some aspects inspired by Pokemon GO. The game seems familiar but surprises you here and after. The game is running as planned, Kanto, the player starting in Pallet Town. The game starts when Professor Oak asks you what you look like, which is different from previous games in which the teacher asks you if you are a boy or a girl, which is really nice. After that, we decided to get our first Pokémon which, depending on the version of the game you bought, is Pikachu or Eevee. I must admit that these two characters are perfect mascots for Let's Go games and they can not evolve throughout the game, you can easily attach to your boyfriend.
Your relationship with your Pokémon is really important here, Nintendo has launched all Nintendogs games with this game and integrated them into the game. A well-groomed Pokemon will be entitled to bonuses in combat, such as avoiding status effects, which is incredibly satisfying when your healed Pokémon heals itself in the fire of the action. It is therefore important to take care of your Pokémon and play it, especially your starter, which you can dress and stylize at your leisure.
Artistically Let's Go is an excellent evolution compared to the latest 3DS games and is absolutely beautiful in anchored mode. Fortunately, unlike some other games, Let's Go also works very well in portable mode, which I'm sure most of us will play. The game also works well and is really well optimized, there was no single instance when the game would have lost images in my experience. The game really looks clean and polite and has improved significantly compared to the shredded character models of previous games. The game clearly benefits from the extra power of the switch compared to the 3DS. The musical score of the game is once again excellent, Junichi Masuda is back as a composer in addition to directing the game.
In terms of gameplay, the most important change in Pokemon: Let's Go Pikachu & Eevee fights against wild and random Pokemon. Game Freak changes the system so much that you can not even call it randomness or battles anymore. Pokémon now appear in the earthly world, arise from water or grass and collide with it. In Let's Go, you'll catch a Pokemon like in Pokemon GO, throwing Poke Balls by timing them as the circle surrounding the Pokémon gets smaller. You can also calm Pokemon with berries to make them easier to catch. Unlike other games in the main lineup, Let's Go encourages you to catch as many Pokémon as you can, giving you experience bonuses for each capture as well as multipliers if you catch several identical species as a result. The system is really rewarding and, depending on your playing style, you can easily improve your group without participating in battles, but simply choose to catch hundreds of Pokemon. You can send your caught Pokémon to the teacher. Additional Pokémon sent will give you rewards, like candies that will increase the stats of your Pokémon. Honestly, I'm not the biggest fan of Pokemon Go, but in Let's Go, the mechanics of capture is really fun and totally convinced me. You can also use a Poke Ball Plus controller to play the game, but I would not recommend it because it's not the most comfortable way to play.
Everything else is pretty much the same, you face other coaches, you win gym badges and you fight against Elite 4. Do not expect a big challenge, it's not Black and White 2, I missing so much this match. Maybe Generation 8 can meet my need for more challenging coaches, please Game Freak?
Remaking Pokemon Yellow was a great decision from Nintendo because the main title was not ready for this year. However, the game seems relatively safe. The game is really fun, but it will only be one of the games I played this year, nothing unforgettable. The game offers important changes in the quality of life, as Game Freak would certainly like for next year's game. Pokemon fans will not be disappointed by Pokemon Let's Go's Pikachu and Eevee and should also prove to be a good starting point for players wishing to enter the series.
