FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) – According to Porsche, its future is in electric cars, but is currently deploying a more powerful version of its main internal combustion medium, the stylish 911 sports car.
Porsche, based in Stuttgart and owned by Volkswagen, will present the eighth version of its iconic model at the Los Angeles Auto Show.
The new 911 does not look very different from previous editions of the car. The new model has larger wheel housings and a slightly wider body, but the same long hood, sloping roof and prominent headlights that have marked successive versions since 1963.
The company said in a press release on Wednesday that the new 911 Carrera S and 4S are equipped with flat-turbo six-cylinder engines developing 443 horsepower, 23 more horsepower than its predecessor. The Carrera S has a top speed of 191 mph and accelerates from zero to 60 mph (96.5 km / h) in 3.5 seconds.
The Carrera S 2020 rear-wheel drive has a base price of $ 113,200 and the 4S all-wheel drive version starts at $ 120,600, not counting the $ 1,050 delivery charge. They can be ordered now and will reach dealers in the summer of 2019.
Porsche director Oliver Blume says the 911 remains "the heart of our brand, we make it even more emotional."
According to Blume, by 2025, about half of all new Porsche cars and SUVs will be equipped with electric motors, whether electric or hybrid, combining batteries and internal combustion engines.
The newspaper Welt am Sonntag, quoted by the press, reportedly said the company would be ready for a world in which some cities and countries are talking about banning internal combustion cars in the coming decades. "It is clear that the future belongs to electric mobility," he said.
The company is developing a fully electric sports car, the Taycan, which could compete with Tesla, BMW and other sports car offerings.
