Southland Mayor Shares Positive National Bowel Experience

Southland District Mayor Gary Tong is
encourage participation at the Southern DHB National Conference.

Mr. Tong admits that after receiving his kit in
the mail, he left it intact for a while.

Southern DHB
The national program for gut screening has been running since
a little more than a year. By the end of April 2019, he has
detected 68 cases of intestinal cancer and 737 cases of polyps,
who can progress to cancer over time.
According to
Ministry of Health, people diagnosed with an early stage of the intestine
cancer who receive early treatment have a 90% chance of
long-term survival.

or cancer at an early stage when it can often be
successfully treated

aged between 60 and 74 eligible for
public health care
* Invitations for people eligible to
participate are sent by mail, followed by a test
pencil case
* Kits are easy and simple to make, and samples
are returned by email for testing
* People are trying
asked to ensure that their contact information is up to date with their
GP not to miss
* If a member of
public warning potential symptoms – as a change of
their normal intestine that lasts several weeks,
or blood in a saddle – they should see their GP
right now, do not wait for their screening test.
