Thousands of heat-stressed bats fall from trees and pose a health hazard in the far north of Queensland, while a record heat wave hits the region.
It is estimated that about 3,500 flying foxes have perished since the beginning of conditions similar to those of an oven, said today a spokeswoman for the Cairns Regional Council.
Health officials have warned residents not to handle flying foxes in distress after an outbreak of bites and scrapes. About 15% of bats carry the potentially lethal Australian lyssavirus.
